Ryan Reynolds trolls Jamie Lee Curtis’ MCU apology

Ryan Reynolds is taking a stand for Jamie Lee Curtis after her recent comments about Marvel sparked controversy.

“Wait, is everyone expected to apologize for slamming Marvel post-Endgame?” Reynolds, 47, questioned on X, formerly Twitter, on Thursday, following Curtis’ apology for her recent remarks about the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU).

The “Freaky Friday” actress, 65, initially criticized the MCU’s current phase as “bad” during an interview with MTV’s Josh Horowitz at San Diego Comic-Con.

She later retracted her statement, writing on X: “My comments about Marvel were stupid and I will do better,” and said she’d reached out to Marvel Studios president Kevin Feige with a personal apology.

“I’ve reached out to Kevin Feige and will no longer play in that mud slinging sandbox of competition we call the internet nor will I engage in the toilet paper promotion or game play that is designed for clicks not content or conversation,” the actress wrote.

On Instagram, Curtis shared a video of her “Borderlands” co-star Kevin Hart praising her for her leadership on the set of their new film with the caption, “If I’m a leader, then a leader shouldn’t talk s—t about other collaborative art form creators.”

Curtis’ comments about the MCU came amid mixed reviews of Marvel’s more recent projects, like “Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania” (2018) and “The Marvels,” (2023), which underperformed at the box office.

In its latest film, “Deadpool & Wolverine,” (2024) Reynolds’ Deadpool character even jokes to Hugh Jackman’s Wolverine, “Welcome to the MCU, by the way. You’re joining at a bit of a low point.”

However, the MCU is possibly on the upswing.

“Deadpool & Wolverine” has received widespread praise and set box office records since its July 26 release, achieving the biggest opening weekend for any R-rated film raking in $444 million, per Forbes.

Additionally, Marvel announced Robert Downey Jr.’s return to the franchise as the villain Doctor Doom — a surprising role reversal from his previous stint as Iron Man/Tony Stark.

Downey’s Avengers co-star Jeremy Renner revealed to Us Weekly that the actor’s return caught him off guard.

“I had no idea,” Renner, 53, told the outlet. “This son of a bitch didn’t say anything to me, and we’re good friends.”

Gwyneth Paltrow, aka Pepper Potts, was otherwise left confused (“I don’t get it”), while Jonathan Majors said he was “heartbroken” over the news.

Doctor Doom is replacing Majors’ Kang the Conqueror as the main villain in the film franchise. Majors, 34, was dumped by the Disney-owned studio late last year after he was found guilty of assault and harassment but received no jail time.
