‘It is the history and tradition of the club’

Real Madrid boss Carlo Ancelotti says winning the Champions League is a tradition for the club.

Los Blancos secured their 15th title after beating Borussia Dortmund at Wembley on Saturday night, extending their record even further.

They have eight more competition wins than AC Milan, Europe’s second-most successful club.

Madrid’s dominance on the biggest stage is to be expected and despite not being at their best against their German opponents, they did exactly what everyone knew they would under the arch in London.

Dortmund had several big chances but failed to take them in the first half and it was only a matter of time before they were going to be punished by the LaLiga champions.

Dani Carvajal scored the all-important opening goal, flicking a header into the far corner from a set piece before Vinicius Junior sealed the deal late on.

As usual, Ancelotti was calm and composed on the touchline but there was a glimpse of emotion at full-time as he celebrated with the team.

Speaking to TNT Sports after the match, he said: “It seems a dream but it is reality. Really happy for sure.

“Really difficult game as usual, they played better first half, we played better second half, but a final is always like this.

“We were able to win, a fantastic season and we are really happy to be able to win the cup again.”

Madrid have the recipe for success under Ancelotti and it seems inevitable that whenever they are in a final, a victory is almost guaranteed.

They have not lost in the Champions League final since 1981 and Ancelotti says it does not matter how many times they have won it in the past, it will always be a tradition for the club to come back and lift the famous trophy.

He added: “It is the history and tradition of the club, of course, the quality of the players, the club is a family, we work altogether without problems and the atmosphere is really good in the dressing room.

“I need to thank the club and the players, no big egos, really humble, it was not difficult to manage the squad this season.”
