‘I don’t think Spurs fans should want them to win’

Jamie Carragher has backed Tottenham fans who would rather lose to Man City tonight to dent Arsenal’s Premier League hopes.

City would return to the top of the table ahead of the final day with a win at the Tottenham Stadium, however failure to win would leave Arsenal as overwhelming favourites to end their 20-year wait for a title.

Speaking on Sky Sports, pundit Jamie Carragher said: “I can’t wait for it to start just to see what the atmosphere is like. It’s not unique. This (situation) has happened before at different times.

“I don’t think a Spurs fan should want the team to win tonight. I grew up in a city with a similar rivalry (Liverpool v Everton). If the boot was on the other foot I think Arsenal fans would be exactly the same, so I’ve got absolutely no problem with any Tottenham supporter not wanting to win this game.”

Carragher said it was ‘normal and perfectly right’ for fans to feel so strongly, though he accepted players and manager Ange Postecoglou would feel different.

“Arsenal have won the league twice at White Hart Lane in 1971 and 2004. If Tottenham win again tonight Arsenal have won the league again at Tottenham’s ground – they just have, that’s what’s happened.”
