Final Fantasy 7 Remake’s Surprise Patch Includes Tifa Outfit Change Ahead of Rebirth Release, Breaks Major Mod

With Final Fantasy VII Rebirth releasing just later this week, Final Fantasy VII Remake got a surprise update, tweaking one of Tifa’s outfits and breaking a heavily used mod.

The update was released across PlayStation and PC last night. Square Enix didn’t reveal full patch notes for version 1.003, only listing “updates to several bugs” on its Steam page. Fans, however, were quick to notice one change in particular in regards to one of Tifa’s outfits.

Warning: Potential spoiler for Final Fantasy 7 below.

As spotted on ResetEra, Tifa’s cowgirl-inspired outfit in a Nibelheim flashback was changed slightly to add a black undershirt under her white button-up. The change is likely a continuity one, as the outfit as patched more closely resembles its design in Rebirth.

Also significant is the fact that the update breaks the crucial FFVIIHook mod on PC, as reported by wccftech. Per its official description, FFVIIHook “unlocks the dev-console, giving access to console commands & easy changes to the games CVars – along with allowing loose INI files to be loaded in from the games config folder!”

FFVIIHook was widely used to fix some of Final Fantasy 7 Remake’s most jarring issues on PC, including stuttering, but, as reported by several comments today, is no longer compatible with the new update.

It’s the first update in months for Final Fantasy VII Remake, as the focus has largely turned to Rebirth as we gear up for its release. We gave Rebirth a 9/10 in our review, with Michael Higham writing that it “impressively builds off of what Remake set in motion, both as a best-in-class action-RPG full of exciting challenges and an awe-inspiring recreation of a world that has meant so much to so many for so long.”
