7 bubble New York Giants with most to gain in final week of camp

It may be hard to believe, but the final week of training camp is upon us. And in exactly seven days from now, the New York Giants will have to make some tough decisions and trim their roster down to the initial 53.

Just three practices remain on the schedule — one of those being a joint practice with the Jets — and then the final preseason game on Saturday night against their New York rivals.

For many players, this will be their final hurrah; their last chance to state their case and prove they belong.

With that in mind, here’s a look at seven bubble players with the most to gain (or lose) in the coming days.

Rookie safety Alex Johnson has played well this offseason and throughout the preseason, earning strong consideration for the 53. However, with Jason Pinnock, Dane Belton, and Tyler Nubin locked in place ahead of him, there’s a battle still to be had. Gervarrius Owens has also played well and has been considered the favorite for S4 thus far, but that could change in the final week.

Allen Robinson provides the Giants a calm, consistent veteran presence and he’s well-respected in the locker room. However, his limited special teams use could come back to haunt him when going up against the likes of Miles Boykin, Isaiah McKenzie, and Gunner Olszewski (injured).

Even if the Giants decide to carry seven wide receivers, Robinson has to make a strong statement this week or risk being cut.

D.J. Davidson, a 2022 fifth-round pick, has not exactly put his best foot forward this summer. He played especially poorly against the Houston Texans. However, with Ryder Anderson being waived/injured on Monday, it leaves a crack in the door for Davidson. He’ll have to play his very best football this week to stand a chance.

The Giants are going to strongly consider special teams play when they make their final cuts, and that bodes well for Carter Coughlin. But will it be enough? Dyontae Johnson (injured), Matthew Adams (injured), and Darius Muasau also play special teams some of them at a high level. The injuries may help Coughlin in the end, but he shouldn’t rely on that. He needs a strong week of practice and play.

Given the injury history of Daniel Jones and the current injury to Drew Lock, it seems imperative that the Giants carry three quarterbacks on the 53-man roster. However, not everyone is sold on that idea and that leaves Tommy DeVito as, potentially, the odd man out. Those of us at Giants Wire don’t necessarily subscribe to that notion, but it would greatly benefit DeVito to finish strong nonetheless.

Daniel Bellinger and rookie Theo Johnson are locked into the top two tight end roles, but there is still an open competition behind them. Chris Manhertz is considered the favorite but he left a bit to be desired against the Texans. Jakob Johnson is likely to make the team in a tight end-fullback role, but there still could be a place for Jack Stoll (most notably, over Manhertz).

It’s somewhat strange that Isaiah Hodgins has become the forgotten man, but that’s a testament to how suddenly deep the Giants are at wide receiver. Unfortunately for Hodgins, he faces the same conundrum as Allen Robinson. Does he bring enough to the team to warrant the lack of special teams play? He’s been steady and reliable for the Giants, but he’ll need to turn it on this week or risk being shown the door.
